My Garage Door is jammed - how do I get out of my carport?

March 11, 2022

Unfortunately, as with many mechanical devices, things go wrong and sometimes in a big way! A common phrase we hear when we answer the phone is “HELP…my garage door is jammed – how do I get out of my carport?”

If your garage door is jammed, and you need to know how to get out of your carport, you first of all need to find the cause of the jam. This can happen for a variety of reasons. The most common reason your garage door is jammed is because a vehicle has impacted it! When you ring one of our friendly staff in the office, we always try to obtain a good description of what has occurred in the lead up to your garage door being jammed so that (if necessary) we can help you get out of your carport, in the case of a car being stuck inside.

Has your garage door come down on your car? Are there any obvious signs of broken components like springs or cables? Have a look around the garage – can you see any parts that have come off of the door or motor which are lying on the floor? Is your garage door still in its tracks?

These may seem like dramatic questions however having the right information can help ascertain a fast and effective solution as to how to get out of your carport.

If you do find your garage door is jammed and you can’t get your car out of your carport, the first thing to do is to see if you can put your door onto manual. By doing this, you can sometimes lift the door manually to allow you to drive your car out of your garage. Our recommendation would always be to contact Fast Fix first to allow a staff member to advise you on what is best to be done. Garage doors are very heavy and it is not always advisable to touch the door yourself, depending on its positioning.

Thankfully, sometimes if your garage door is jammed, it’s not always because of some catastrophe which has happened – it can be that your door has been out of alignment for some time and has worked its way over to one side and is now jammed. This would require a technician from Fast Fix Roller Doors to attend your property to assess the condition of the door. In most cases Fast Fix can remove the tracks so that the alignment can be corrected to make the door run correctly again.
